Indiramma Canteens are revolutionizing access to affordable and nutritious meals for Hyderabad’s underprivileged citizens. Offering meals at just Rs. 5 each, the initiative is heavily subsidized by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which covers Rs. 14 per breakfast and Rs. 24.83 per meal. This enables beneficiaries, including daily wage earners, students, auto and taxi drivers, and sanitation workers, to save up to Rs. 3,000 per month, significantly easing their financial burden.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar emphasized, “Guided by the Chief Minister’s vision, Indiramma Canteens ensure affordable meals for all. While the government bears the financial responsibility, our commitment is to provide quality food at nominal prices for the poor.” He added that the canteens form part of a larger welfare vision inspired by Indiramma, which includes free household electricity, free bus travel for women, and interest-free loans.
Since its launch, the program has served over 12.30 crore meals at a total cost of Rs. 253.87 crore. Yearly figures include 72.31 lakh meals in 2022 (Rs. 18.81 crore), 93.03 lakh in 2023 (Rs. 23.38 crore), 65.86 lakh in 2024 (Rs. 18.20 crore), and 39.21 lakh meals till July 2025 (Rs. 11.72 crore).
Twelve canteens, including four in Jubilee Hills, are ready for inauguration. Flooring is complete at 50 more, with drainage and water connections expected within 10 days. Branding and renovation of 11 permanent canteens will finish within a month, while 77 others will be upgraded in Phase II.
Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi highlighted, “Indiramma Canteens are a lifeline for the poor. We plan to expand to 150 locations, prioritizing women’s Self Help Groups for operations, strengthening community ownership and empowerment.” Following the Chief Minister’s directive, a breakfast menu including millet idly, upma, pongal, and poori will be introduced soon, expected to serve an additional 30,000 beneficiaries daily with an annual budget of Rs. 12.60 crore.
Through these efforts, Hyderabad is steadily moving toward becoming a hunger-free city while promoting women empowerment, social welfare, and inclusive urban development.
