September 17 – Telangana’s leap into people’s governance

“People are the centre of governance. Governance by the people, for the people, is the only path to lasting democracy.”

September 17 marks a turning point in Telangana’s history, the day in 1948 when the region transitioned from autocratic Nizam rule to democratic governance through its integration into the Indian Republic under Operation Polo. This event was more than political, it was the birth of people’s power.

For nearly two centuries, the people of Telangana had no voice in governance. The fall of the Nizam’s rule opened the door to participatory democracy, where citizens could finally influence decisions, elect leaders, and shape the future.

Some debate whether the day should be called an ‘annexation’ or ‘liberation,’ but for the people, it was liberation of democracy. That’s why it is rightfully honoured as People’s Governance Day—a day celebrating citizen empowerment over political narratives.

The Congress leadership’s bold decision to integrate Hyderabad State into the Indian Union ended one of India’s last feudal regimes. What followed was the establishment of democratic institutions, local governance, and equal representation—rights denied under the Nizam.

People’s governance means dignity, equality, and freedom. September 17 stands as a symbol of that transformation. It reminds us that democracy must be kept alive through active participation and accountability.

More than a historic date, September 17 is a call to action to safeguard democratic values and ensure governance remains in the hands of the people. Telangana’s journey from monarchy to democracy continues to inspire, urging future generations to uphold the spirit of freedom and justice.
