Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu has announced that construction on the Polavaram irrigation project is progressing strictly in line with the schedule released by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, marking a revival of momentum after setbacks under the previous government.
A key milestone in the project, the Gap-2 Diaphragm Wall, is seeing rapid progress, said the Minister. He further added that of the planned 1,396 metres, 500 metres of the structure have already been completed as of Tuesday. The works are being executed using three trench cutters and three grabbers, with teams working at high speed to meet the targeted December 2025 completion for the diaphragm wall.
Minister Rama Naidu said construction continues even during the flood season, with dewatering operations ensuring uninterrupted progress. Simultaneously, work on the buttress dam to strengthen the upper coffer dam has crossed 90% completion.
He emphasised that these efforts are aimed at correcting the “historic blunder” of the previous administration, which left the project in limbo. The current government, he said, has restored the project’s pace and priority.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is treating the Polavaram project as a flagship mission, with the goal of making it operational by December 2027. The Minister assured that all critical components are being advanced in parallel to meet this deadline and deliver the project to the people of Andhra Pradesh without further delay.
