A couple from Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, after years of struggling to conceive, finally turned to IVF and were overjoyed to discover they were expecting twins. However, at just six months into the pregnancy, the mother faced abdominal pain and water leakage, leading them to rush to Hyderabad for delivery. Despite doctors’ efforts to delay labor, the twins were born prematurely at 26 weeks.

The newborns developed severe infections, and one tragically passed away within a week due to a fungal infection and kidney complications. The surviving twin, a ‘baby who conquered death,’ battled multiple health challenges, including lung problems, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and infections.

Dr. R V Soujanya, Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist at Kamineni Hospitals, explained that IVF pregnancies often result in earlier deliveries, and water leakage increases infection risk. The baby was placed on a ventilator for nearly two months, suffered multiple NEC attacks, and required 12 blood transfusions over three months.

With intensive care, including antibiotics, antifungals, and TPN nutrition, the baby gradually gained strength. By 36 weeks, the baby weighed 1.5 kg and was transferred from NICU to a ward. At 38 weeks, the baby reached 1.7 kg and was discharged, showing remarkable progress. Now stable and thriving, this tiny fighter has overcome enormous odds, but continuous monitoring for developmental milestones will be crucial for his future health.
