The Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has reiterated the Congress’ commitment to ensuring social justice by announcing that his party will field BC candidates in 42% of seats in the local body elections. He challenged the BJP and BRS to follow suit and support BC representation

"Providing legal sanctity for 42% reservation to BCs may take time. However, the Congress is ready to make a political amendment to ensure justice for BCs. I will speak to the TPCC president and guarantee 42% seats for BC candidates on behalf of the party," said CM Revanth Reddy in the Assembly after the government made a statement on the Caste survey done by his government.

It may be mentioned here that there is a Supreme Court cap of overall quota not to exceed the 50% cap including that for SCs and STs. In the previous panchayat elections, BCs got a maximum of 23% quota.

Criticizing the BRS leadership, the Chief Minister questioned why KCR, KTR, Harish Rao, Padma Rao, and even BJP MP DK Aruna failed to participate in the recent caste census survey conducted by the Congress government. He KCR’s family skipped the survey allegedly fearing the disclosure of their land holdings.

Revanth Reddy also dismissed the 2014 Samagra Kutumba Survey conducted by the previous BRS government, stating that if it were an official document, it should have been placed in the Assembly or approved by the Cabinet. He questioned why KCR’s family kept the survey report secret and did not make it public.

The Congress Party stands firm in its commitment to BC empowerment, ensuring that their political representation is prioritized, he stressed.

No caste survey for BCs after 1931: Revanth

Earlier, CM Revanth Reddy made a statement on the Caste Survey - 2024 report in the Assembly, emphasizing that no caste survey has been conducted in India since 1931 (British era).

Addressing the longstanding demand for SC sub-classification, CM reiterated that the government would proceed in accordance with the Supreme Court's verdict, the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub-Committee, and the findings of the One-Member Commission led by Justice Shameem Akhtar.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the caste census document is not a political tool but a foundational reference for a dedicated commission to make informed decisions. He expressed hope that this initiative would increase pressure on the Prime Minister to consider a nationwide caste census.

Cabinet approves Caste Census and SCs Sub-categorization

In a significant development, the Telangana Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has approved the Comprehensive Caste Census and Scheduled Caste (SC) Sub-categorisation reports. The Cabinet met for nearly two hours in the Assembly Hall to deliberate on these pivotal documents, which are set to be presented and ratified in the Telangana legislature.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized that Telangana has made history by conducting the nation's first comprehensive caste census. He highlighted the thoroughness of the survey and the meticulous collection of data, positioning Telangana as a model for other states in matters of caste enumeration and SC classification. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that this initiative would intensify the call for a nationwide caste census, thereby increasing pressure on the Prime Minister to act.

Addressing the issue of SCs classification, CM Reddy affirmed that the state government would proceed in accordance with the Supreme Court's verdict, as well as the recommendations from the Cabinet Sub-Committee and the One-Member Commission established for this purpose.
