India’s automobile industry reported healthy sales growth in January, with leading carmakers and two-wheeler manufacturers benefiting from steady consumer demand and momentum built during the festive season.

Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest carmaker, said its domestic passenger vehicle dispatches stood at 1,74,529 units in January, marginally higher than 1,73,599 units a year ago. While sales of mini cars such as Alto and S-Presso remained largely flat, compact car dispatches declined year-on-year. In contrast, utility vehicles recorded strong growth, driven by models like Brezza, Grand Vitara and Ertiga. The company reported its highest-ever monthly total sales of 2,36,963 units, supported by robust bookings averaging nearly 9,000–10,000 units per day.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles posted a sharp 46 per cent rise in domestic sales at 70,222 units in January, compared with 48,076 units in the same month last year. Mahindra & Mahindra also reported strong performance, with domestic dispatches rising 25 per cent year-on-year to 63,510 units.

Hyundai Motor India recorded a 9 per cent increase in domestic wholesales at 59,107 units, while Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported a 17 per cent growth in domestic sales at 30,630 units. Kia India posted a 10 per cent rise in sales to 27,603 units, supported by steady demand for its SUV and MPV portfolio. Renault India reported a 34 per cent year-on-year increase in dispatches to 3,715 units.

In the two-wheeler segment, Hero MotoCorp led the growth with a 26 per cent jump in dispatches to 5,20,208 units. Royal Enfield reported a 16 per cent increase in domestic sales at 93,781 units, while TVS Motor Company saw domestic two-wheeler sales rise 30 per cent to 3,83,262 units.

Industry players said demand remained resilient at the start of 2026, supported by new model launches, improved availability and sustained consumer confidence.
