In a major boost to urban infrastructure and public safety, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has successfully filled 6,796 of the 10,382 catch pits (silt traps or inspection chambers are small underground chambers typically used in drainage systems to trap debris, silt, and solid particles) identified across the city as part of its ongoing Road Safety Drive. The initiative, launched to reduce road accidents and improve driving conditions—especially during the monsoon season—has picked up pace with focused efforts in all six municipal zones.

On Wednesday alone, GHMC teams filled 416 catch pits across the city. The corporation has been working round the clock to address issues related to potholes, damaged central medians, and water-logging-prone areas, which often lead to road hazards. Officials stated that the special drive is aimed at enhancing commuter safety and will continue at a faster pace in the coming days.

Progress has been steady across various zones. In the LB Nagar Zone, of the 2,533 catch pits identified, 1,918 have already been filled, including 80 on Wednesday. In the Charminar Zone, GHMC has filled 1,463 of 1,873 catch pits so far, with 99 completed in a single day. The Khairatabad Zone has repaired 823 of its 1,241 pits, including 44 on the same day.

In Serilingampally Zone, 538 out of 1,546 catch pits have been addressed to date, with 51 repaired on Wednesday. Kukatpally Zone recorded 1,037 of 1,381 catch pits filled, including 67 on the day. Meanwhile, in the Secunderabad Zone, 1,017 of 1,808 pits have been completed, with 75 covered during the day’s operations.
