GHMC Commissioner K Ilambarithi has directed officials to conduct a comprehensive survey on the Yakutpura drainage system. On Wednesday morning, the Commissioner, along with local MLA Jaffer Hussain and corporators, inspected several storm water drains in Yakutpura. The Commissioner instructed officials to complete the ongoing works in the Old City before the upcoming monsoon season.

During the inspection, the Commissioner visited areas including Rangeli Khidki, Hussain Koti, Moula Ka Chilla, Ganga Nagar, and Rein Bazar. Initially, he observed the overflow of sewage water in the streets of Rangeli Khidki. Maintenance engineering officials explained that the drainage system from Jahangir Nagar to Ganga Nagar, constructed during the Nizam era, had caused flooding during the last rainy season. Consequently, the Commissioner instructed project engineering officials to conduct a comprehensive survey and submit a detailed report on the condition of the drainage system.

Later, the Commissioner inspected the Ganga Nagar drain at Moula Ka Chilla. The MLA informed the Commissioner that the drain work, ongoing for three years, was still incomplete. The Commissioner urged the agency to expedite the work and complete it within the stipulated time frame, assuring that there were no funding issues.

The Commissioner also directed the Zonal Commissioner to immediately remove the accumulated garbage in the drains, as residents complained about stagnant water entering their homes. Similar to the Road Development Plan, Commissioner Ilambarithi emphasized the need for a master plan for the development of storm water drains in Hyderabad. This plan aims to ensure systematic development, maintenance, and expansion of the city's drainage system, aiding in flood mitigation and connecting existing drains with new urban extensions.

Commissioner Ilambarithi highlighted that drainage works under the SNDP were undertaken to alleviate the difficulties faced by residents in the Old City. He mentioned that actions were being taken to commence the second phase of SNDP works with an estimated cost of Rs 545 crores. The tender process has been completed, and efforts are underway to start the construction work.
